Topics include an overview of theories of literacy development from various eras (including cognitive and sociocultural perspectives), the reading brain, the history of the English language, technology and literacy, and reading comprehension.

This is a discussion-post heavy course which creates valuable conversations between students from different teaching contexts. The assignments also offer opportunities for those outside the K-12 to draw from their personal and professional experiences. Many of the discussions ask for "life" examples through which to explore the course readings. The assessment points are open to non K-12 examples.
The Connected Classroom

Connected learning and pedagogical approaches can be applied to any educational context. The projects in this course are designed to examine teaching and learning approaches and hence can be applied to any context, either in K-12 or in vocational and advanced learning situations. The final assignment allows students to envision what connected learning might look like within their context.

This is an applied curriculum course. Students in the course are asked to take course readings and apply them directly to professional practice. If your professional practice requires you to develop and facilitate instruction, this is a great class for you. This course does contain instructional readings on higher education and workplace instruction. If you are looking for a more theoretical approach to curriculum, then GDE/PME 810 is a more appropriate class.
