While browsing the Faculty of Education website you may notice some brand new colourful illustrations.

These illustrations were made for the Faculty by BEd’20 graduate Portia “Po” Chapman. Chapman, a graduate of the Artist in Community Education (ACE) program, has already created multiple commissions for the Queen’s community including a mural that now hangs in Kingston Hall, and illustrations for the Office of Indigenous Initiatives.

The Faculty of Education series of seven illustrations is titled “Together with Grandmother Moon.” These drawings are done in Chapman’s signature style. Bright colours, and thick black lines are used to create shapes that the viewer can interpret. The pieces in this series are:

Traditional Knowledge
Ogichidaakwewak – Community
Place-Based Learning
Elder-in-Residence
Giving
Inclusion
Sharing

By using broad titles, Po Chapman asks the viewer to look closely at the images and explore the shapes and colours.

We hope that the illustrations will provide users with the opportunity to pause and look deeper into the concepts they represent.

Portia Chapman is also the artist of a beautiful hand drum that was commissioned for the Faculty. The drum is completely handmade, from the finishing of the frame, to the stretching of the canvas, and the detailed paintings on the face. You can see this drum displayed on student street in Duncan McArthur Hall.

A colourful painted hand drum rests against some grass and rocks.
