Kris Reppas, BFA Fine and Studio Arts graduate and World Indigenous Studies in Education (WISE) program student, is thrilled to be beginning a new path working with and for Two-Spirit people across Canada. In his new role as Two-Spirit Program Admin Coordinator with Community-Based Research Centre, Kris has the opportunity to progress wellbeing within the Two-Spirit community. “Our team explores health initiatives for Two-Spirit and Indigenous LGBTQIIA+ folks and gives valuable input on research affecting our peoples,” Kris explains.
The relationships Kris has developed through the WISE program have built an invaluable learning environment, which has paved the way for his current connections with coworkers and Two-Spirit community members. “One of the most valuable connections I've made through this program is Jennifer Davis,” Kris shares. “She has become the biggest champion of my work and research, encouraging me every step of the way. She's been so open to learning everything I discover along my learning journey but has also been a great sounding board for new ideas I haven't considered. Jen is such a blessing to have in these spaces and deserves her flowers for how she shows up for all of her students.”
The WISE program has also given Kris the opportunity to make beautiful memories with elders and fellow WISE students. “I really valued going to the Queen's learning lodge last summer with my cohort,” Kris reflects. “Going out of the city and onto the land gave us the opportunity to connect with each other in real and genuine ways. Folks were able to go canoeing and visit with the water, and Elder Deb took us on a medicine walk to identify local plants and their off erings. It's an experience that couldn't be replicated in a classroom and it was truly one of my favourite memories from the program so far.”
After joining the team at CBRC, Kris was also welcomed with open arms. “All of my new coworkers welcomed me into the circle and our team grew to seven people,” Kris shares. “Our colleague, Auntie, and Two-Spirit Diva Jaylene remarked that it was like the seven grandfather teachings – our circle was complete. It's been amazing to be welcomed by other Two-Spirit people.”
What inspires Kris most is the flourishing of the Two-Spirit community. “I really hope that my career and research inspire other Two-Spirit folks to live fully and experience all of the love, joy, and laughter that exists in the world. It's hard to say where my journey is going to take me,” he says, “but I hope that someone, someday will enjoy and benefit from this work.”
