Science Literacy Week, September 21-27, 2020 is a Canada-wide celebration of science sponsored by the National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Canadian Wildlife Federation.
With the support of funding from NSERC, the Education Community Outreach Centre is proud to sponsor award-winning children’s author, Dr. Lindsey Carmichael, as its Author in Residence to celebrate Science Literacy Week in Kingston, ON.
The theme of this year’s Science Literacy Week program is biodiversity, and we are happy to feature Lindsey’s book, The Boreal Forest, in workshops for educators, students and the community.
Lindsey will be delivering over 20 virtual sessions this week for the university community, area schools and community programs. Sessions for children (Ask an Author) and adults (Research Skills and Writing) are being hosted by the Kingston Frontenac Public Library. You can see Lindsey’s answers to children’s questions daily on the library’s YouTube Channel.
In collaboration with Let’s Talk Science’s HORIZON PROJECT, the Education Community Outreach Centre is delighted to share 400 Grade 4 – 6 STEM Kits that include a book, activities to do STEM experiments at home, materials for crafts and experiments. All kits will be supplemented with an autographed copy either FOX TALK or FUZZY FORENSICS by Lindsey.
All of these kits and workshops, including a Family STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) Night kit that will feature a hands-on water filtration experiment to do at home are provided at no cost.
We are grateful for the generous funding from NSERC PromoScience. With this support, the Education Community Outreach Centre is able to bring fun-filled, inspirational science in important ways to many people in and around the Kingston area. Have fun and keep learning!
