Queen’s University is partnering with the Limestone District School Board to bring hands-on technological education to local students as they prepare to enter high school in September. Students will engage in active learning with university-level instructors and teacher candidates at the Technological Education Learning Lab located in the Queen’s Faculty of Education.

This program, TRICOLOUR TECH, is part of the Recognition of Experiential Learning for Credit (RELC) program funded by the Ontario Ministry of Education. Students will learn about careers in the skilled trades and real-world skill development in four areas:

  • Transportation: control and transportation systems
  • Manufacturing: welding and fabrication techniques
  • Construction: carpentry and woodworking
  • Green Industries: sustainability and horticulture

TRICOLOUR TECH provides all students with equitable learning opportunities, including those with special education needs, racialized students, Indigenous students, and students from low-income families. This reach ahead program spans four days (32 hours of immersive learning) and contributes to each student’s learning portfolio as part of the RELC Grade 11 Open level credit.

Technological Education instructor and program coordinator, Ena Holtermann reflects on the program: “We are excited to witness the transformative impact of this program on the lives of our students as they embark on a path towards lifelong learning, innovation, and success in STEM and skilled trades."
