Technological Education

In these positions, you will work closely with instructors teaching mature students who are transitioning from careers in the skilled trades and/or service industries into roles as educators of Technological Education.  Ideal candidates will be familiar with Ontario’s Technological Education curriculum.  In addition to the job requirements below, responsibilities will include providing hands-on instructional support and offering mentorship to students navigating this important career shift.

CURR 360 (TEMS), Teaching Technological Education Pt 1, 1 position @ 50 hours (July)*

CURR 361 (TEMS), Teaching Technological Education Pt 2, 1 position @ 50 hours (July)*

CURR 369 (TEMS), Curriculum Development in Tech Ed Pt 1, 1 position @ 50 hours (July)*

*In addition to the usual TA duties, these positions will need

  • Steel-toed safety shoes/boots
  • Ability to lift up to 15kgs
  • Ability to handle various tools (e.g. pliers, hammers, handheld power tools)
  • Willingness to observe all safety precautions for protection against accidents, dangerous fluids, chemicals etc.
  • Adherence to personal protective equipment (PPE) use
  • Tolerance of odors associated with various chemicals and adhesives used in manufacturing, construction, and vehicle service. 

Preference will be given to those who have a technological background in design education, STEM, and project management.

Job Requirements

The primary purpose for teaching assistantships is to provide support for the Bachelor of Education courses in the Faculty of Education. Duties may include: attending class; general duties to assist the professor, assisting with classroom instruction; assisting with the preparation of class materials, marking, meeting with and/or responding to (email) student queries, and other duties as assigned. Many instructors will require you to be available to review the course and participate in the planning process prior to the commencement of the course.  Candidates must be prepared to work outside of the regular 9-5 work week, and previous teaching experience would be considered an asset.  TA hours are limited to a maximum of 10 hours per week on average.  Applicants must be current graduate students at Queen’s University.  

Teaching Assistants are expected to be in person unless otherwise specified.

Application Process

The process of assigning qualified graduate students to these positions is outlined in the Collective Agreement between the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and Queen’s University. Applications will be reviewed and positions allocated in reference to candidates’ teaching and academic experience as it applies to the course subject field and in reference to the candidates’ priority for a Teaching Assistantship as specified by the Collective Agreement.
