Arts for Social Change Research Cluster

Mission

The Arts for Social Change cluster aims to activate community engagement and social change through the arts, across the lifespan, in school and community contexts. Our research and activities—involving local, regional, national, and international partners—investigates and supports professional, school, and community learning and arts engagement. We specifically emphasize arts learning experiences and engagement that address and advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, such as quality education (Goal #4), good health and well-being (Goal #3), and climate action (Goal #14).

Current Activities and Projects

Arts Education for Sustainable Development

In partnership with the Canadian Society for Education through Art, we are collecting project submissions for an online showcase to highlight arts learning experiences and teaching practices that address one or more of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Drawing from these and other project examples collected from the UNESCO Associated Schools Network, we aim to mobilize exemplary practices and resources around how to leverage arts education for sustainable development.

Arts for Transformative Education: Supporting Teacher Professional Learning in Sub-Saharan Africa

We have been working in collaboration with 1 Million Teachers to develop training modules that target effective arts learning practices to support UNESCO priorities for education.

Sistema Music Programs: Exploring Impact within Schools and Communities

This project, in collaboration with Karma Tomm, Sistema Kingston, and Sistema Canada investigates how Sistema-inspired programs impact host schools and communities.

Queen’s Imagines the Future (QITF) Arts Festival

Inspired by the Youth Imagine the Future Festival, the QITF Arts Festival will showcase artworks from students across all programs in our faculty. The artwork submissions will address and represent positive futures that address the intersecting crises associated with climate change.
