Len Minty BSc Queen’s & BEd McArthur College (1969), MA York (1985)

I left McArthur College 2 months before graduation to assume an emergency teaching position in science at Cobourg East H. S. The following September, I started my 30 year permanent teaching job in Math and Physics in North York. While teaching, I earned an MA in Mathematics from York U. in 1985. During my 30 year tenure in North York I coached swimming and track producing numerous OFSSA Champions. Three of my swimmers went on to become CIAU Champions and three of my runners became Canadian Olympians. Having been a Queen’s athlete, I personally went on to have a long career in Masters Swimming setting dozens of national records and two world records. I became heavily involved in coaching dragon boat paddling, raced with Sing Fai Athletic Club in Canada and abroad and was the first coach of the Peterborough Survivors Abreast Team in 2000. In 2011, I was inducted into the Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame as a swimmer and paddler. In 2014, I wrote and published a memoir "The Juniper Boy" about growing up on Stoney Lake. In retirement I spent 10 years Scottish Country and Highland Dancing and have for the last 25 years played my banjo in various jazz bands and the bass trombone in several local Big Bands.

Blythe and I were married in 1968 and we have two sons, Tyler and Joel, who graduated from Queen’s in 2000 and 2005 respectively.

We’ve spent the last 53 summers on Stoney Lake where I’ve taught children swimming and paddling and initiated a Yacht Club, an Annual Family Paddle, a Kid’s Fishing Derby, a Readers Club and competed in every Annual Mile Swim.
