INTERNAL: Funding and Awards

Funding

The Elliott/Upitis/Bamji/Hajee Travel Fellowships will be primarily awarded to Queen’s Education faculty members for research outside Canada in the field of teacher education or related fields. Alternatively, awards may be made to faculty members from outside Canada to enable them to come to the Faculty of Education to work with Queen’s Education faculty members and students in the field of teacher education or related fields. Faculty members are all those on continuing appointments, including continuing and renewable adjunct faculty.

An invitation to apply will be sent to all faculty members by the Dean's Office at relevant times throughout the year. If you have questions about the Travel Fellowships, you can contact the Dean's Office at edudeans@queensu.ca.

Funding will be provided for a significant new initiative or new development in an existing research program. It is expected that normally at least 50% of the funding would be used to support Faculty of Education graduate students as research assistants.

An invitation to apply will be sent to all eligible members (which includes tenure-track/tenured faculty and continuing adjuncts) by the Dean's Office prior to the application period. If you have any questions relating to these grants, please contact the Dean's Office at edudeans@queensu.ca.

Applications for the Community Initiatives and Teaching Excellence Fund can be submitted by September 30, December 15, and April 30. The application form and budget template must be completed in full, and applicants should allow 4 weeks for review and a decision by the committee. Please note that funds are limited.

Applications and reports should be submitted to educdeans@queensu.ca.

Both funds are managed at the discretion of the Dean, and a committee consisting of representatives from finance, advancement, and the Office of the Dean. These funds are supported by donations from our community. Detailed reports from successful applicants will support the continued development of these funds.

Applicants must complete a report detailing how the funds were used within 3 months of using the funds to educdeans@queensu.ca.

The Community Initiatives Fund provides opportunities for the Faculty of Education to engage with our community. This can involve bringing local students to our Faculty for events (such as the Youth Forum); sharing our student and alumni expertise globally through our podcast, Popular Podagogy; and supporting resource development, such as the Anti-Racism Resource for Educators and My Kitchen Science Show.

The Teaching Excellence Fund supports programs and events for teacher candidates. This fund brings lectures and workshops to the Faculty, supports annual student initiatives such as the Queen's Conference on Education (organized by Concurrent Education Students Association), and supports events and training opportunities such as TRIBES and equity and social justice workshops for teacher candidates.

Documents for Community Initiatives and Teaching Excellence Funds

Staff members are available to act as a liaison with the Office of University Research Services (URS) and to assist with applications for other University and external funding opportunities.

The URS administers various Queen's University initiatives as well as external funding opportunities. Its website provides useful information on funding sources and submission of proposals. Faculty can sign up for the URS Funding Opportunities Distribution List and search its archives.

Queen's University is a member of the Community of Science (COS), an international research network that covers the humanities and the physical, social, and life sciences. The COS has an extensive database, and funding alerts link the expertise profile of the user to relevant news announcements which are then provided by email. The ORS gives workshops on the use of the database and funding alerts.

The staff of the Graduate Studies and Research Office forward relevant messages from the ORS and COS lists to graduate students.
