Get a head start on your teaching career by earning two degrees at the same time. From your first day at Queen's, you'll work toward both an undergraduate honours degree and a Bachelor of Education (BEd) in either Primary-Junior (Kindergarten to Grade 6) or Intermediate-Senior (Grades 7-12).
Graduate with a Bachelor of Education and one of the following honours degrees:

Queen's ConEd Highlights
- Start your teaching journey from day one: Take education courses alongside your undergraduate studies and build your knowledge of teaching and learning throughout your degree, not just at the end.
- Gain hands-on experience every year: Work with children and youth in community settings during your first two years, complete your first classroom practicum in year three, and finish with extensive in-school placements and an alternative practicum in your final year.

- Customize your path: Choose between Primary-Junior (Kindergarten to Grade 6) or Intermediate-Senior (Grades 7-12), then tailor your degree with specialized program tracks or concentrations in your final year. You can also apply to one of our direct-entry programs (Music, French, or Kinesiology), allowing you to begin your major from day one rather than declaring it after first year.
Years 1-3
(Sept. - May)
- End of year 1: Choose your teaching divisions: Primary–Junior (JK–Grade 6) or Intermediate–Senior (Grades 7–12)
- Take an education course each year alongside your Arts and Science degree
- Get hands-on experience through placements in non-classroom settings working with children and youth (years 1 & 2)
- Step into a real classroom for your first in-school placement (year 3)
- If you choose to go on exchange in year 3, you are able to complete Education requirements in year 4.
Year 4
(Sept. - April)
- If you are interested in one of our track programs: Artist in Community Education, Indigenous Teacher Education, Outdoor and Experiential Education, and Primary-Junior French as a Second Language, submit an application in the fall of year 4. If you choose not to join a track program, you'll select a concentration in the summer before year 5.
- Concentrations combine two courses and the two-week alternative practicum. Not all concentrations are offered every year.
Year 5
(Sept. - April)
- Classes in year 5 are set up in a block format rather than a traditional semester system. There are on-campus blocks and practicum blocks.
- Complete 13 weeks of practicum in an Ontario classroom in one of our 28 partner District School Boards.
- Complete a two-week alternative practicum - anywhere in the world - it just has to be related to your concentration.
Application Process
You apply to the Concurrent Education program at the same time as your Queen's Bachelor of Arts (including French), Music, or Science (including Kinesiology) through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre. Applications are coordinatred by the Queen’s University Undergraduate Admission Office.
Selection is based on applicants' academic standing. Prerequisite courses are the same as those for entrance into the Arts and Science degree program you are applying to at Queen’s.

You apply for the ConEd French program directly through OUAC using the code QBF.
Students admitted to this program are automatically placed in a French major right from first year, rather than waiting until second year to declare their major (as is the case with most Arts and Science programs).
At the end of the first year, students choose their teaching divisions: Primary-Junior (JK - Grade 6) or Intermediate-Senior (Grades 7 - 12).
- Those who choose Primary-Junior will be automatically placed in the Primary-Junior French as a Second Language program track in their final year.
- Those who choose Intermediate-Senior must have French as a Second Language as their first teaching subject.
Please Note: Students who are admitted into the ConEd French program must meet the requirements to be placed in the Primary-Junior French as a Second Language program track (Primary-Junior) or have French as their first teaching subject (Intermediate-Senior) in their Final/BEd year.

- In this program, your teaching divisions must be Intermediate-Senior (Grades 7-12)
- You will need to select two teaching subjects from the following list of options: Health & Physical Education, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Geography. One of your teaching subjects must be Health & Physical Education.
You apply for the ConEd Bachelor of Music program directly through OUAC using code QMM.
Acceptance is based on high school grades and a successful demonstration of musical abilities through a live or recorded portfolio/audition. The Bachelor of Music webpage has more information.
In-Class Practicums and Experiential Placements
Placements and Practicum
Gain practical experience from your first years in the program. In Years 1 and 2, you'll complete self-arranged placements in community settings like early learning centres, museums, galleries, Boys and Girls Clubs, and provincial parks, working with children aged 3 to 15.
In Year 3, you'll complete a four-week practicum in an Ontario classroom. In your final year, you'll spend 13 weeks in publicly funded Ontario schools, building your teaching skills alongside experienced educators, and you'll complete a two-week alternative practicum anywhere in the world.
Where are Practicums?
Starting in year 3, you will complete your practicum placements within our catchment area, which includes 28 publicly funded school boards from Burlington to Cornwall. Before beginning your year 3 and year 5 practicum placements, you'll select four preferred school boards, and we'll place you in one of those choices. Although it isn't always possible, we aim to keep you within a one-hour drive of your home address.
Local Kingston-area school boards are unable to accommodate all of our students. School board capacity varies each year, meaning that some teacher candidates may be placed farther from home and may need to commute or temporarily relocate during practicum blocks. Access to a vehicle can increase your placement options and flexibility.
Our Practicum Office coordinates placements for nearly 1,000 teacher candidates each year in partnership witch school boards across Southern Ontario, who all have their own protocols. Teacher candidates are not permitted to arrange their own practicum placements.
Alternative Practicum
The two-week Alternative Practicum, completed in year 5, offers you the opportunity to explore teaching and learning outside the traditional school system, anywhere in the world. Typically completed in March, this practicum must align with one of the goals of your concentration and provides a chance to boraden your educational experience in a setting that supports your professional interests.
Teacher candidates are responsible for arranging their own Alternative Practicum placements. These can take place anywhere in the world, offering a unique opportunity to gain international or community-based experience. Travel fellowships are available to Ontario residents to help offset associated costs.

The amount it costs to attend Queen's will depend somewhat on the choices you make, which will affect your budget (such as where your extended practicum and/or alternative practicum is located).
