Exceptional Learners

Alternative practicum location:

Fáilte Isteach in Ireland - across Bray, Greystones, and Dublin!

What was your focus?

During my Alternative Practicum with Fáilte Isteach, I supported the delivery of free, student-centred conversational English classes for adult migrants, refugees, and international protection applicants in Ireland. My primary responsibilities included co-facilitating small group conversations, preparing informal and practical lesson materials based on learners’ immediate needs, and fostering a welcoming, café-style environment where participants could build their English skills.

How was your experience?

Amazing! I learned so much and would love to go back to Ireland.

How did you find this placement?

I found Fáilte Isteach through Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and the Bray and North Wicklow Area Partnership (BNWAP). Shoutout to them for making it happen!

Is there a moment that stands out from your alternative practicum?

One of my favorite moments was sitting around a table weaving earrings with Ukrainian women. Traditional Ukrainian bead jewelry has this long, beautiful history and is an important part of their cultural heritage. I feel very lucky to have been included.

Did anything surprise you during your placement?

Turns out, you can have a ton of fun with strangers and no shared language.

I remember one session where the energy was just off and conversation was not flowing. So I threw out the lesson plan, looked around the table, and asked if they liked card games. To break the ice, I said, "Okay, who here knows how to play Bullshit?" Cue confused looks, then giggles, then someone pointing a finger across the table and yelling "LIAR!" We spent the next hour playing, laughing, and learning numbers and colours through pure chaos. Getting shushed by the volunteer coordinator for having too much fun was totally worth it.
