Short Bio
I am a retired Ontario elementary school principal with experience teaching students across both the elementary and secondary panels. Since 2006, I have been an online instructor with the Faculty of Education at Queen’s University, where I have taught Special Education Part One, the Junior ABQ course, and all levels of Teacher Leadership. I am passionate about supporting educators in building inclusive, engaging classrooms and developing their leadership capacity.
My Favourite AB/ABQ Course to Teach
Junior ABQ remains my favourite to teach. Course participants consistently tell me that the knowledge and instructional strategies they gain are applicable well beyond the junior division and can be adapted for learners from primary through senior grades.
What makes this course especially meaningful to me is that its principles extend beyond the classroom. The emphasis on understanding learners, building relationships, and responding to individual strengths reflects fundamental human needs at every age. These approaches enrich both our teaching and our everyday interactions.
One Strategy Teachers Can Use Tomorrow
One of the most powerful ideas explored throughout the course is to identify and nurture each learner’s passions and interests, then use those strengths to empower students in their learning.
This begins with creating a genuine, inclusive classroom environment that is equitable, engaging, and responsive to students’ experiences, identities, and aspirations. When students see themselves reflected in their learning and feel their voices matter, motivation, confidence, and achievement naturally grow.
