I currently teach Grade 4/5 in Kimberley, British Columbia and also facilitate continuing education courses in literacy and inclusive education, drawing on previous experience in Learning Services supporting diverse learners.
Two of my favourite courses to teach are CONT937: Literacy in the Middle Grades and CONT994: Social Emotional Learning because both remind us that literacy growth and well-being are deeply connected.
The literacy course helps educators navigate current research and BC’s Literacy and Numeracy Progressions and Pathways while considering our role in supporting students along the continuum from learning to read to reading to learn, recognizing that learners arrive with diverse strengths and experiences. A strategy teachers can use tomorrow is structured partner talk before writing, allowing students to orally rehearse ideas with sentence stems and teacher modelling before moving to independent work.
I value the Social Emotional Learning course because it keeps relationships, belonging, and student competencies at the forefront of our practice. Together, these courses provide practical, responsive strategies that educators can implement immediately to support both the academic and social-emotional growth of all learners.
