CONT687: Intermediate Family Studies
This course explores the multifaceted subject area of Family Studies for the Intermediate division focusing on Grades 9 and 10 specifically. You’ll connect standards of practice to Family Studies and examine best practices in planning and implementing programming and assessment that is culturally responsive, reflective of learner identity and accessible to all learners. Working within a professional learning community, you will share experiences and strategies based on pedagogical theory and principles. The course culminates with the consolidation of your learning into a comprehensive curricular resource to apply to your practice going forward.

What You Will Learn and Do
In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to
- integrate professional knowledge into rich and engaging programing within Intermediate Division Family Studies
- consider pedagogical processes, assessments and evaluations practices that link curriculum to learner interests, strengths, inquiries, needs and well-being
- utilize Ontario curriculum, resources and government policies, frameworks and strategies to develop Intermediate Family Studies courses
- investigate the integration of culturally inclusive pedagogies within program design, planning and development
- create inclusive and innovative learning environments (e.g., universal design, experiential learning and project-based learning) that integrate a variety of instructional strategies to respond to the interests and needs of all learners
- critically explore fair, equitable, transparent, valid and reliable assessment and evaluation methods that honour the dignity, emotional wellness, identities and development of all learners
- discuss and openly address biases, discrimination and systemic barriers in order to support learner learning, resiliency, well-being and inclusion
- explore sustainable/viable postsecondary pathways and transitions that reflect learning across courses within Family Studies
