CONT573: Intermediate Mathematics
Are you ready to transform the way you think about and teach Intermediate math? Whether you’re new to teaching math or an experienced teacher, this course will help you create and build inclusive, engaging, and effective math classrooms that are rooted in equity, curricular understanding, and real-world relevance. Through six learning modules, you’ll explore current pedagogies, such as the thinking classroom, data-driven instruction, and assessment practices, while addressing timely topics like de-streaming, student anxiety, and the use of technology. You will learn how to support all learners in your classroom, ensuring that your teaching remains accessible. You will deepen your understanding of teaching mathematics, reflect on your practice, and share ideas to collaboratively build a portfolio of resources and strategies. The course culminates with the creation of a complete, inclusive, and engaging unit plan that applies your learning in a practical way and prepares you to refine your practice and reimagine your math classroom

What You Will Learn and Do
In this course you’ll have the opportunity to
- explore ethical standards, educational research, and curriculums to inform inclusive and culturally responsive math teaching practices, including Indigenous awareness and social justice
- examine strategies to foster supportive and safe learning environments that encourage collaboration and promote an appreciation for mathematics
- explore instructional practices (e.g., thinking classroom, spiralled unit plans) and explore the integration of technology to engage all learners in the math classroom
- apply specific strategies, supports, and accommodations for English language learners and students with IEPs to ensure equitable learning opportunities
- consider innovative assessment methods to evaluate student learning and design tasks that align with curricular goals and individual progress
- plan and support transitions for students between school levels (e.g., from Elementary to Secondary) and develop an understanding of pathway planning for students beyond Grade 9
- collaborate with course colleagues to create a resource portfolio of strategies that amplify student voice, promote innovative teaching, and align with curricular goals and student interests for engaging, successful math education
