CONT563: ABQ Primary
Welcome to the Additional Basic Qualification (ABQ) course Primary Division. In this course, you will learn how the standards of practice shape and guide us as lifelong learners in our profession. You will learn the importance of creating positive and inclusive environments for student learning. You will learn how to nurture critical thinkers who are risk takers, global citizens, and successful problem solvers, and learners who persevere in the face of challenges. You will also learn how critical feedback empowers and inspires students to positively reflect on and identify goals for their learning. In this professional learning community, you and your colleagues will critically explore and integrate environmentally sustainable practices, policies, and pedagogies in our practice as educators. Collaboratively, you will work with your colleagues to differentiate educational instruction and assessment using the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework. You will learn the difference between assessment and evaluation, and identify different types of assessment methods, strategies, and tools to provide effective feedback for Primary learners.

What You Will Learn and Do
In this course, you will have the opportunity to
- investigate theoretical foundations and best practices for creating positive learning environments that recognize the agency, strengths and lived experiences of Primary learners
- refine professional practice through ongoing collaborative inquiry, dialogue, reflection, innovation, critical pedagogy and learner engagement
- explore instructional strategies, assessment tools and resources to meet the needs of Primary learners
- identify processes for effective communication and engagement strategies for authentic collaboration with parents, families, caregivers, guardians, Elders, school/board personnel and community agencies
- design programming that fosters engagement and collaboration with learners, in-school personnel, parents, families, caregivers, guardians, Elders, and the community to support the learning, identities and well-being of students
- identify biases, assumptions, beliefs, understandings, power and privilege, and describe how these affect relationships, teaching and learning within the Primary division
- engage in critical dialogue on child development and the diverse ways of knowing to inform a practice that supports learner agency and the intellectual, social, emotional, physical, linguistic, cultural, spiritual and moral development of Primary learners
