CONT543: Mathematics, Primary and Junior Part 2
This course will deepen course participants’ understanding of math teaching and learning by integrating content knowledge, learning trajectories, research, instructional design, assessment, and how your teaching reflects your definition of effective teaching. You will explore key math concepts from across the Ontario curriculum with a focus on how students’ understanding develops over time and where common misconceptions arise. You’ll also explore ways to create equitable, culturally relevant and responsive, meaningful, experiential, and research-informed learning experiences. The course emphasizes assessment development and concludes with an introduction to interdisciplinary, cross-curricular mathematics.

What You Will Learn and Do
In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to
- examine the Ontario math curriculum across and between all strands
- explore dominant narratives and misconceptions about teaching and learning excellence in math education
- consider learning progressions and trajectories that guide instructional planning and personalize student support for diverse learners
- design cross-curricular activities, assessments, projects, lessons, and units
- develop and implement authentic learning activities that cultivate student agency, ownership, and engagement through inquiry-based and experiential learning to reinforce local and global citizenship
- analyze research-informed practices to ground instructional and curriculum design decisions in evidence
- explore assessment systems, methods, and grading options to diversify opportunities for students to show evidence of learning
- examine and adapt instructional strategies (e.g., guided math, math talks, three-act tasks) to create meaningful learning
- reflect on your professional identity and philosophy of teaching as a math educator and how that influences how you teach and connect with your students
