CONT533: Reading Part 1
This course explores the theory and practice of instructional reading and is applicable across all divisions. Candidates will explore course content through an exploration of the OHRC Right to Read Inquiry, the development of practical tasks, the examination of evidence-based practices informed by the Science of Reading, collaborative discussion with colleagues, and the compilation of a final portfolio. Reading, Part 1 will help candidates develop a comprehensive reading program that focuses on foundational skills and reading engagement to foster fluent and confident readers.

What You Will Learn and Do
In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to
- critically explore and interpret Ontario’s curriculum, policies, frameworks, strategies and guidelines for teaching reading
apply cognitive and critical pedagogies as a theoretical foundation for the design, assessment and implementation of practices and programs - critically examinedcurrent theoretical research, literature and scholarship related to Reading Part 1
- analyze and integrate learning theories and the individual strengths, styles and needs of learners
- identify and explore the integration of current and effective instructional strategies that address various dimensions of teaching reading
- examine various approaches to curriculum integration through diverse planning models, content and resource development, pedagogical practices, and the implementation of assessment and evaluation practices that are fair and transparent
- investigate the integration of culturally inclusive pedagogies within program design, planning and development
- integrate a variety of resources, including technological and communication resources, to enhance professional knowledge in support of learning, independence, well-being and agency
- collaborate with colleagues and reflect on learning throughout this course to help develop and/or support a strong reading program for learners
