CONT526: First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples: Understanding Traditional Teachings, Histories, Current Issues and Cultures, Specialist
This third and final part of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples: Understanding Traditional Teachings, Histories, Current Issues and Cultures, Specialist, is intended to provide candidates with an overview of some of the issues and changes needed in education in order to answer the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action. It focuses on the inclusive aspects of traditional pedagogy, and encourages candidates to examine their own experiences in the education system. The final material in this course outlines the steps candidates can take to conduct their own action research projects. It also prepares them to make presentations that will provide school and community audiences with authentic, respectful information regarding the need for changes in classrooms and schools.

In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to
- promote professional practice that collaboratively develops opportunities in current school cultures, classroom environments, pedagogy and curriculum to include First Nations, Métis and Inuit culture, traditional teachings, histories, current issues and resources that benefit both First Nations, Métis and Inuit learners and non-First Nations, Métis and Inuit learners
- facilitate critical dialogue regarding the significance of and the meanings Indigenous Peoples across Canada attach to them
foster a culture of professional inquiry that explores key historical events that have impacted First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples - foster knowledge creation and mobilization of professional reflection and dialogue to share best practices on teaching First Nations, Métis and Inuit students
- foster a culture of professional inquiry and dialogue around current perceptions and realities regarding First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples
