The Blended format of the Manufacturing Technology, Grades 9 (TMJ1O) and 10 (TMJ2O) course is designed to help you expand your teaching expertise in technological education. This course equips you to teach a range of technologies or pursue specialized courses in the field.

You will explore strategies for active, inquiry-based learning by integrating learner development, subject knowledge, pedagogy, and technological skills. You will apply your experience and technical knowledge to demonstrate proficiency in the Grade 9 and 10 Technological Education and Skilled Trades curriculum, connecting theory with hands-on practice.

A key feature of this course is its partnership with the Ontario Council for Technology Education (OCTE). Through OCTE-led workshops and practicum opportunities, you will gain practical experience with current tools, equipment, and instructional practices used in modern manufacturing and fabrication settings. These sessions, led by experienced educators and industry professionals, help you build technical confidence, safety awareness, and curriculum connections aligned with TMJ1O and TMJ2O expectations. These workshops have a separate fee, set by and paid to OCTE.

By the end of the course, you will leave with both strong pedagogical skills and industry-relevant competence.

Important: The course is composed of two components: The online components offered by Queen’s University (Modules 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7) and in-person workshops offered by OCTE (Modules 5 and 6, with an additional fee set by and paid to OCTE). While the course is designed for you to complete the online components first, you may complete OCTE workshops before the online components if necessary. Both Queen’s University online components and OCTE workshops must be completed in order for the Manufacturing Technology Grades 9/10 qualification to be recommended to the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) on the candidate’s behalf.

To be admitted to the online course, applicants must meet the minimum admission requirements (see below).

While the required OCTE workshops and the CONT494 online course may be taken simultaneously, CTE allows up to two years to complete both components. The two-year period begins at either:

  • completion date of the CONT494 online course 
  • completion date of the first OCTE workshop

What You Will Learn and Do

In this online course, you will have the opportunity to

  • compare current health and safety legislation and its application in the manufacturing learning environment
  • practice safe use of basic equipment and demonstrate essential metalworking skills in the shop
  • develop teaching and learning materials for Grade 9 and 10 Manufacturing Technology courses (TMJ1O, TMJ2O)
  • relate the design process to project planning in the learning environment
  • create lessons and assessments using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles
  • design culturally responsive, inclusive, and equitable learning environments and materials
  • identify environmental and sustainability factors relevant to manufacturing technology
  • apply instructional design, learning theory, and best practices for program planning, assessment, and ethical considerations

In OCTE workshops, you will have the opportunity to 

  • practice the safe and effective operation of core manufacturing tools, machines, and equipment commonly used in Grade 9 and 10 manufacturing programs
  • demonstrate foundational machining, welding, CNC, CAD, and fabrication skills through structured hands-on training led by experienced educators and industry professionals
  • apply Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs), PPE expectations, lock-out procedures, and shop safety protocols in alignment with Ontario Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and board safety expectations
  • document learning progress through sketches, photos, videos, reflections, and instructional notes that will inform lesson planning for your own classroom practices
  • connect theoretical concepts introduced in Queen’s online modules with practical, real-world applications in the shop environment
  • analyze and reflect on instructional strategies modelled throughout the workshops, including demonstration-based instruction, scaffolded skill-building, and formative skill assessment
  • gather classroom-ready activities, shop projects, and curriculum-aligned teaching resources that can be directly integrated into Manufacturing Technology programs
  • develop confidence in guiding students through hands-on skill acquisition, project-based learning, and safe use of manufacturing
