CONT999: Teacher Librarian Specialist
It’s time to investigate how an effective teacher librarian leader can transform a school community. By assuming a leadership position, it is possible to support knowledge building, promote a current educational practice, and encourage a participatory learning culture in the library learning commons (LLCs) and beyond! In this course, you’ll explore how building positive relationships with teaching colleagues and administration encourages essential collaborative practice-the key to shepherding instructional change, embracing new technologies, and promoting student learning.
If you are interested in learning how you can support knowledge acquisition, determine the unique requirements of your school, anticipate and strategize for challenges, and encourage a community of engaged student learners, this course will help to provide the answers. Be prepared to shift to a “yes” culture, where the teacher librarian demonstrates the qualities of a self-directed learner, seeks out new approaches, identifies instructional and resource needs, and offers innovative alternatives to support the learning of all community members. Your coursework will contribute to a final project expressing your philosophy about teacher librarianship and providing a strategic blueprint for future implementation.

In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to
- develop a deeper understanding of the teacher librarian's essential role in facilitating knowledge creation in their community
- recognize that building positive collaborative partnerships and establishing a supportive culture throughout the school, district, and community is essential to the work of teacher librarians
- provide leadership and support to colleagues through an in-depth understanding of the BC education curriculum
- identify, evaluate, and curate print and digital/technology resources that effectively support the school community's curricular needs, either directly or indirectly
- establish the qualities of a self-directed learner by setting and achieving personal goals for professional development to remain a current and effective steward of educational change
- identify the unique educational needs of your community, including school, district, and provincial expectations, and affirm these through the support of current, credible research and consultation with key stakeholders
- promote the teacher librarian's essential role in establishing a culture of reading for pleasure and information-seeking to support academic success
