CONT992: Restorative Justice and Practices in Educational Settings
In this comprehensive course, you’ll delve into the principles and possibilities of restorative justice (RJ) and practices, offering you perspectives and tools to create a healthy community within your educational setting. You’ll explore the roots and foundational principles of RJ and their significance in educational settings, gaining insights into historical contexts and contemporary applications. You’ll learn practical mindsets and strategies to integrate restorative practices into day-to-day interactions by centring reparations, building relationships, and nurturing a sense of belonging.
You’ll examine the role of justice, equity, anti-racism and decolonization in creating spaces that value all students’ unique identities and needs. You'll acquire community-building and conflict-resolution skills by building on social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies. You’ll analyze youth justice leadership and learn to plan and facilitate circle practices. You will complete the course by creating a portfolio of restorative practices and frameworks that promote educative justice, healing, connection and transformation for all learners.

In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to
- investigate the Indigenous roots of RJ and its connection to the First Peoples’ principles of learning in BC
- offer support to your educational setting through an in-depth understanding of RJ principles and how they can be integral to transforming school cultures
- use gained knowledge and resources to connect SEL to justice in education
- demonstrate the qualities of equity-informed justice by modelling and promoting accountable, anti-racist and healing-centred practices
- engage in circle work and promote youth leadership to incorporate RJ into teaching and learning contexts
- incorporate critical and creative thinking skills to connect self-awareness skills to restorative practices and transformative justice in educational settings
