CONT940: English Language Learners Part 2
Do you want to know more about ELLs to improve the instruction and support they receive to meet their academic and social requirements?
In British Columbia, ELLs must meet specific language standards. In this course, you’ll learn ways to work with these standards concurrently with the BC curriculum. The course examines ELL language pedagogy, explores language skill development, considers processes and frameworks, strategies and supports, and reviews equitable classroom practices. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to offer supportive learning environments for ELLs and all learners.

What You Will Learn and Do
In this course, you will have the opportunity to
- learn teaching strategies and pedagogies, theories, approaches, methods and learning models in second language teaching to support ELLs in English and other content areas
- consider the needs of different ELL groups in your classroom, school, district, and beyond
- understand the importance of including learners in their language learning journey
- explore language skill development, essential outcomes, instructional practices and learning strategies to support differentiated learning
- review the BC Ministry of Education curriculum expectations and resources for ELLs
- practice language pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching using different learning frameworks
- plan through First Peoples Principles of Learning lens
- design and assess using a second language methodology for teaching reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary in all content areas
