CONT927: Teaching Students with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
As an educator, you are vital to making a difference for the complex students in your care. The Teaching Students with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) course is designed for teachers interested in expanding their knowledge of FASD and learning evidence-based strategies for supporting students with complex developmental behaviour conditions. Through acceptance, curiosity and understanding, teachers can be empowered to create classroom environments that meet the needs of their complex students. As the course is grounded in Indigenous knowledge and First Peoples Principles of Learning, you'll explore FASD through compassionate systems, questioning personal biases and societal stigmas. In this course you’ll have the opportunity to
- examine FASD through compassionate systems to implement trauma-informed practices in an educational setting
- discern foundational knowledge about FASD, including prevalence, symptoms, diagnostic criteria and prevention
- model and adapt expectations, evidence-based strategies and assessment practices in response to the individual needs of students with FASD
- deconstruct personal and societal beliefs, biases and stigmas about FASD
- create an FASD-informed approach that supports resiliency, student, family and community wellness, and strength-based practices
- implement culturally appropriate, evidence-based practice grounded in Indigenous knowledge and First Peoples Principles of Learning
