CONT926: BC Indigenous Peoples Part 1
In this course, you’ll immerse yourself in the First Peoples' principles of learning, gain insights into the contextual realities of Indigenous Peoples and communities living in what is now called British Columbia, and enhance your understanding of how the education system can better meet the needs of Indigenous learners.
Progress on the road to reconciliation and reconciliACTION requires sustained and determined effort and ongoing education. This course profiles Indigenous perspectives to inspire further integration of these perspectives into BC's education system. The goal is to strengthen educators' understanding of Indigeneity's resilience, protocols, pedagogy, and excellence and to show them how to apply this knowledge to lesson development and classroom pedagogy.
Throughout this course, you will critically explore and enhance your professional practice, critical pedagogy, knowledge, and skills. You will employ critical pedagogy to examine theoretical foundations, learning theory, program planning, instructional design, assessment, research, and ethical considerations in teaching while weaving Indigenous perspectives across disciplines, thereby supporting the educational needs of all diverse learners in classrooms and learning environments.

In this course you’ll have the opportunity to:
- explore educational documents, frameworks, Indigenous worldviews, and pedagogy to enhance the integration of Indigeneity into your educational practice
- investigate the effects of colonization, the advancements in reparations and reconciliation, and the rich diversity of Indigenous communities, languages, and ways of knowing and being
- apply Indigeneity practices and pedagogy with a focus on truth, justice, and reconciliation to your teaching and learning practice
- design strategies and assessment tools that promote cultural safety in the classroom and school community while reflecting the principles of Indigenous pedagogy and ways of knowing
- create a cross-curricular inquiry project centred on Indigenous content and pedagogy
- develop lesson plans that emphasize Indigenous excellence, resistance, and revitalization
- synthesize and curate a learning portfolio to support a continuous process of learning, unlearning, and fostering personal and professional growth
