CONT904: Inclusive Education Part 1
What does it mean to create a truly inclusive classroom? How can educators ensure that every student, regardless of background or ability, feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed?
Inclusive education is more than a practice. It’s a mindset that ensures equitable access to learning for all students. This course explores key principles of inclusive education, focusing on strategies that foster accessibility, engagement, and belonging. You’ll develop practical skills to support diverse student populations, including English language learners (ELLs), Indigenous students, students with refugee experiences, 2SLGBTQ+ students, and children and youth in care. The course also delves into competency-based individual education plans (CB-IEPs), universal design for learning (UDL), and evidence-based instructional strategies to ensure all learners thrive.
Through collaboration with peers, reflection on current practices, and the exploration of policy and pedagogy, you’ll gain the knowledge and confidence to create dynamic, inclusive learning environments.

In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to
- explore the diverse nature of students in BC classrooms and define meaningful inclusion
- develop strategies to support specific populations, including neurodiverse students, ELLs, Indigenous learners, and students with complex needs
- apply UDL principles to promote equitable opportunities for students
- examine the history of inclusive education and current policies in BC’s education system
- examine the process of student diagnosis and designation and the impact on support funding and resources
- learn how to build rapport and foster connections with students to understand their learning strengths and needs
- collaborate with members of the educational team to create an inclusive classroom culture
- create student profiles and CB-IEPs tailored to neurodivergent learners
- develop data collection tools to track student progress toward CB-IEP goals
