Course Description
This is a self-directed course that allows professionals to explore an aspect of their emerging leadership within the context of developing and completing a capstone project. The purpose of this project is to enable students to more deeply explore the current and relevant educational challenges and issues within their own practice and/or organization. Students can choose to work with their instructor as a mentor, or they can be paired up with a community mentor who is an expert in their area of interest. The mentor will help guide the completion of the capstone project, providing suggestions, direction, and clarity.

How does this course support learners outside K-12 teaching contexts?
This course gives students the opportunity to integrate and apply aspects of previous coursework learning into the production of a final project focused on a topic in which they are interested and would like to pursue. The capstone project is student-initiated, involves rigorous research inquiry, and is highly relevant to each student’s unique goals and priorities.
Each student’s professional practice and goals are unique. We highly encourage students to reach out to their course instructors at the start of the term to discuss the relevance and application of course learning and assignments to their own learning goals and context of practice.
PLEASE NOTE: PME 896 students do not conduct research with human subjects.
- PME 896 does not provide University ethical clearance to conduct research with human subjects. Therefore, while the capstone project could be a research proposal, the proposed research would take place outside the scope of the course (following the ethical guidelines of one’s organization/context). Students will work with their instructor to ensure their capstone project meets PME 896 course requirements and parameters.
