Course Description
This course explores teaching and leadership in multi-ethnic schools and other cultural community settings. Various leadership strategies will be discussed with the aim of fostering greater transparency, accessibility, and equity among students, staff, stakeholders, and the community at large.
Learning Outcomes
The primary learning outcomes for GDE/PME 851 are to:
- Describe why learning about cultural diversity is important for educators and organizational leaders
- Examine how our own personal biases and culture may shape our equity-related praxis
- Describe culturally relevant and culturally sustaining pedagogical praxis
- Compare and analyze various approaches to social justice leadership in schools and other organizations
- Describe culturally responsive family engagement
- Establish culturally responsive community engagement

How does this course support learners outside K-12 teaching contexts?
The core ideas of this course are applicable to any educational setting. Of all the courses in the Global Education concentration, this is perhaps the most applicable to those working outside the K-12 teaching context.
Each student’s professional practice and goals are unique. We highly encourage students to reach out to their course instructors at the start of the term to discuss the relevance and application of course learning and assignments to their own learning goals and context of practice.
