Dr. Brian Gravel (Tufts University) and Dr. Vanessa Svihla (University of New Mexico) will lead a practical workshop focused on the STEM literacies that can be addressed in school-based Makerspaces. Increasingly, maker spaces and maker technologies provide extended learning opportunities for school-aged young people. In such environments participants engage in many forms of communication where individuals and groups of people are focused on different projects simultaneously. Focus will be placed on how makerspace participants engage with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) as they create and produce physical products of personal and social value. Specifically, this workshop will focus on how makerspace participants can be supported in the posing and solve of problems; the identification and integration of information of different kinds (visual, quantitative, and verbal); and the sharing of ideas, knowledge and their work with others. This 90-minute workshop will be offered twice at 9:00 and 11:00 respectively. The workshop will be held in the education library’s Learning Corner.
