Teacher Certification

Ontario College of Teachers (OCT)

The Faculty Registrar will inform the Registrar of the Ontario College of Teachers when a student has successfully completed the program of professional education, including successful completion of the practicum.  Graduating teacher candidates who plan to teach in Ontario must formally register with the OCT to be awarded the Certificate of Qualification and Registration as a teacher and to become members of the College.  This includes completion of the OCT registration form and submission of supporting documentation, such as transcripts.

Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC)

In Canada, the Constitution Act 1867 gives jurisdiction over education to the provinces. Hence, there is no federal Minister of Education. Therefore, each province has created and is responsible for their own education system. Ontario's is the largest. The Council of Ministers of Education, Canada have agreed that teaching and learning should be portable across jurisdictions. This applies to teacher certification. However, given the different curriculum taught in each jurisdiction, a teacher certified in one jurisdiction (province) would need to ensure they have the requisite background to teach in a different place.
