Students in the Queen’s-Trent Concurrent Education Program are enrolled in both the Trent University Faculty of Arts and Science and Queen’s Faculty of Education. Students work towards completing a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science from Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. Upon successful completion of the first degree at Trent University, students attend Queen’s in Kingston to complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Education.
At the end of Year 1 students select one of two program options.
Primary-Junior (PJ) for those intending to teach Junior-Kindergarten to Grade 6. There are no teaching subjects required.
Intermediate-Senior (IS) for those intending to teach students in Grades 7 to 12. Two teaching subjects are selected from the following list:
• Computer Studies
• Dramatic Arts
• English
• French as a Second Language
• Geography
• History
• Mathematics
• Science - Biology
• Science - Chemistry
• Science - Physics
• Visual Arts
Queen’s offers three optional program tracks within the PJ and IS program options. Teacher Candidates may apply for a program track in Year 4 of their program.
• Aboriginal Teacher Education (ATE)
• Artist in Community Education (ACE)
• Outdoor & Experiential Education (OEE)
The program track courses are outlined in the Concurrent Degree Program section of the Academic Calendar.
Year 1
• five Trent Arts or Science full-year courses
• one Queen’s Education course Self as Teacher (spanning fall and winter terms)
• Experiences in Schools I (a 10-day placement)
Year 2
• five Trent Arts or Science full-year courses
• one Queen’s Education course Self as Learner (spanning fall and winter terms)
• Experiences in Schools II (a 15-day placement)
Year 3
• five Trent Arts or Science full-year courses
• one Queen’s Education course Professional (spanning fall and winter terms)
• Experiences in Schools III (a 15-day placement)
Year 4
• complete your Trent Honours degree
• no Queen’s Education courses required
Year 5
• candidates complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Education degree at Queen’s Faculty of Education in Kingston, including up to sixteen weeks practice teaching in schools
