Queen's Concurrent Program

Students in the Queen’s Concurrent Education Program are enrolled in both the Queen’s Faculty of Arts and Science and the Faculty of Education. Students work towards completing a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Bachelor of Science (Honours), Bachelor of Computing (Honours) or Bachelor of Music from Queen’s. Upon successful completion of the first degree, students complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Education.

Queen’s Concurrent Program Options

Queen’s offers two program options for Queen’s Concurrent Education teacher candidates:  

Primary-Junior (PJ) for those intending to teach Junior-Kindergarten to Grade 6. There are no teaching subjects required for those intending to teach Primary-Junior (PJ).  

Intermediate-Senior (IS) for those intending to teach students in Grades 7 to 12.

Program Tracks Offered in Year 5 of the Queen's Concurrent Education

Queen’s offers three program tracks within the PJ and IS program options in Year 5 of the Queen’s Concurrent Education Program:

Aboriginal Teacher Education (ATE)  

Artist in Community Education (ACE)
Outdoor & Experiential Education (OEE)

Information about program tracks is outlined in the Consecutive Education program section. Queen's Concurrent Education students, who wish to pursue a program track in Year 5, apply in Year 4 of the program.

Typical Queen's Concurrent Education Program Schedule

  Year 1
• Five Queen’s Arts or Science full-year courses
• Two Queen’s Education courses: Introduction to Teaching and Introduction to Curriculum
• Experiences in Schools I (a 10-day placement)
• At the end of Year 1, candidates select a program option: Primary-Junior or Intermediate-Senior

Year 2
• Five Queen’s Arts or Science full-year courses
• One Queen’s Education course
• Experiences in Schools II (a 15-day placement)

Year 3
• Five Queen’s Arts or Science full-year courses
• One Queen’s Education course
• Experiences in Schools III (a 15-day placement)

Year 4
• Courses to complete your Queen’s Honours degree
• No Queen’s Education courses required

Year 5
• Candidates complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Education degree at Queen’s Faculty of Education in Kingston, including up to sixteen weeks practice teaching in schools
