1. Decide upon the Broad-Based Technology to which you should apply.
2. Determine if you have a broad enough range of related technical skills and knowledge to qualify for application to that broad-based technology.
Below are the seven Broad-based Technological (BBT) areas that are taught in Ontario secondary schools. Listed under each BBT area, we have included some of the specific skills that a future teacher should have, to help you determine which Broad-based Technological area fits your related postsecondary skilled work and/or related wage-earning experience.

*Applicants for Hairstyling and Aesthetics or Transportation Technology require a Certificate of Qualification because they are compulsory regulated trades.
The term Broad-based Technology suggests that a broad range of technical skills and knowledge are needed in the specific Broad-based Technology to which you are applying. A single technical skill set is not acceptable at this point in time (see list of skill sets above). This means that you should have a minimum range of 2 to 4 skill sets in one Broad-based Technology to be considered for admission to a teacher education in Technological Education at Queen’s University. You find skills sets as the technical skills and knowledge in our information outlining course descriptions and in the Ontario Ministry of Education courses you may have examined online.
The chart example below shows an example of how breadth of technological experience would be interpreted in Construction Technology. Note that if you have only one skill set (the left hand column), you are considered inadmissible because your technical expertise is too narrow for the Ontario Broad-based Technology programs presently in Ontario Secondary Schools.

When you complete our Teacher Education program, you will be prepared to teach students in the Grade 9 Integrated Technologies course, and then courses in one of the above BBT areas at the Grades 10-12 levels in which you are qualified.
To further assist you determine if you have the skill set needed the specific Broad-based Technology to which you are applying, ALL the secondary school Technological Studies courses are listed and described in the document Technological Education Information Package that we’ve put together for you.

If the content of the secondary school courses you examined matches your technical background AND a minimum range of 2 to 4 skill sets in one Broad-based Technology, then you should apply to that Broad-based Technology. If your technical background does not match the content of the secondary school courses you examined, start this process over to consider another Broad-based Technology. If you do not find that there is a course that matches your technical background, then you do not have the technical background to apply for a teacher education program in Technological Education. The Ontario secondary school curriculum does not address all technical fields.
