The community-based Diploma in Education option is open to applicants with Grade 12 or equivalent. The two-year part-time program option prepares candidates to teach in the Primary and Junior divisions (Junior Kindergarten to Grade Six). Upon successful completion of the program graduates obtain the Diploma in Education (DipEd), and the Faculty Registrar will inform the Registrar of the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) for the awarding of the Certificate of Qualification as a teacher in the Primary and Junior divisions.

1. Aboriginal ancestry
|
Applicants for the Diploma in Education must be of Aboriginal ancestry. Diploma candidates must submit documentary proof of Native ancestry as specified by the Ontario College of Teachers when they apply to the College for certification. It is the candidate's responsibility to check the OCT website or contact the College (1-888-534-2222) in advance to determine what documentation is required. |
| 2. Ontario Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12) or equivalent | An official transcript showing completion of Grade 12 is required by the date specified on the application form. Please speak to the Faculty of Education Registrar's office regarding equivalents to Grade 12 (toll free: 800-862-6701). |

The community-based Bachelor of Education, Primary-Junior program, is open to applicants with a previous university degree. This two-year part-time program prepares candidates to teach in the Primary and Junior divisions (Junior Kindergarten to Grade Six). Upon successful completion of the program graduates obtain the Bachelor of Education (BEd), and the Faculty Registrar will inform the Registrar of the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) for the awarding of the Certificate of Qualification as a teacher in the Primary and Junior divisions.

Selection of candidates is based on review and evaluation of a completed application form, academic transcripts and supplementary materials.
All Community-based program applicants (diploma and degree) must submit documents outlined below 15 February 2013, to one of the Community-based ATEP sites listed on the application form:

3. Personal Statement of Experience |

The Aboriginal Teacher Education PSE consists of the following questions:
1. Using the chart, list up to 5 activities or jobs (paid or unpaid) that you have been involved in, including the positions held. Activities are valued equally and may include but are not limited to the arts, athletics, hobbies, volunteer, religious, social, farm, and/or household responsibilities.
2. [approximately 500 words]: Explain what you have learned from your list of experiences that will help you as a future educator in an Aboriginal context. Use paragraphs and full sentences. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your written communication skills.
3. [approximately 500 words]: List, in point form, the reasons for your interest in Aboriginal Education.
4. Referee: please provide the name and contact information of an individual not related to you (employer, supervisor, etc.) who can attest to your skills or experience in at least some of the areas you have listed. Your referee may be contacted to verify your statement. |

4. Two Letters of Community Support |
Have two respected members of your Aboriginal community write letters on your behalf indicating their support of you attending our Teacher Education Program. Examples of respected Aboriginal community members might include Elders, Education Counsellors, Teachers, Principals, Directors of your Local Friendship Centre, Elected Chiefs of a First Nation Council, Work Supervisors, Clergy, and Professors. Only original letters will be accepted, containing original signatures. Photocopies or fax copies of the letters will not be accepted. |

5. Résumé |
The résumé should provide a clear and concise overview of both (a) your academic background, and (b) work experience. |
