UWCSEA Scholarship

The United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA) in Singapore is offering a unique employment-related scholarship specifically for students within the Faculty of Education, Queen’s University, who are either in their final year in the B.Ed. program or completing an M.Ed.

The College offers one or two $5,000 scholarships per year, designed as financial assistance for students completing their program in the year of the award. Applicants should be committed to working in the international sector.

Why is UWCSEA offering these scholarships?

As one of the world’s leading international schools, UWCSEA employs high quality teaching staff from across the globe. We have a number of Canadian nationals amongst our faculty and are keen to encourage more to apply. The nature of the College and its location in the vibrant city state of Singapore means that it is not always practical to employ teachers who have only just graduated from a B.Ed. program.

The scholarship is intended to be the beginning of a relationship with graduates which we hope would lead to employment at UWCSEA two to three years after graduation. Our aspiration is that graduates, having worked in another school or college for a period of time would wish to join the staff at UWCSEA.

Why would I want to work at UWCSEA?

The College offers a stimulating environment in which you can hone your skills working alongside experienced practitioners. We have an excellent professional development program, which includes the sponsorship of Masters Degrees and the possibility of sabbaticals, and the employment benefits are generous. More details on the professional environment can be found on the College website (www.uwcsea.edu.sg).

What sort of teachers are you looking to employ?

UWCSEA’s vision is to be a leader in international education, with a worldwide reputation for providing a challenging, holistic values-based education with an emphasis upon academic achievement, service to others, teamwork and leadership.

In the pursuit of this vision, UWCSEA provides teachers with as dynamic and challenging a professional life as could be found anywhere. Our core commitment to a holistic education has resulted in the provision of an extensive range of experiential and service-based programs. Teachers are expected to contribute wholeheartedly to the provision of both curricular and extra-curricular programs. All teachers run activities or service projects in addition to their teaching, and also support the College’s range of sporting, dramatic and musical performances as well as the extensive expeditions program, which sees over 230 expeditions outside Singapore per academic year.

What are the selection criteria?

Applicants would have to demonstrate that they subscribe to the values of the College and would be prepared to contribute to the extensive program we offer outside the classroom. Applicants would need to show that they have the potential to be able to teach the curriculum we offer at the College.

If I am awarded a scholarship would that mean I would definitely have a job at UWCSEA at some stage in the future?

We sincerely hope that the award of a scholarship would lead to employment at UWCSEA, however we cannot guarantee it for a number of reasons. Although the College is expanding significantly over the next five years we would not be able to guarantee that in any one year we would have a post available that would suit your particular skills and talents. Given the size of the College, the chances are good that one would become available. We would expect teachers awarded a scholarship to go through the normal application process. That said, we would anticipate that they would be strong candidates for positions at the College. If you were unsuccessful in your application then you would be released from any obligation to the College.

What are my obligations to UWCSEA if I am awarded a scholarship?

We would expect you to apply for a post at UWCSEA 2-3 years after leaving Queen’s University and, if appointed, to complete a contract of three years at the College. If an applicant has at least 2 years of prior K-12 full time classroom teaching experience s/he might be considered for a position immediately following graduation.

We do acknowledge that individuals’ hopes and aspirations change over time, therefore we would understand if in two years’ time you wished to pursue your career elsewhere. If you subsequently decide that you do not wish to apply for a post at UWCSEA all we would ask you to do is repay the scholarship. We don’t think we can be fairer than that.

How do I apply for a scholarship?

Your application should take the form of a letter of application with a C.V. A joint maximum length of 5 pages applies to all applications and C.V.s.

The letter of application should state what it is about the College that attracts you, your teaching experience to date and how you could support the College’s extensive program of Activities, Expeditions, Global Concerns and Service projects. You should also give examples from your own experience to date of how you have ‘lived’ the College values.

Applicants should include a home telephone number and the contact details (including email addresses) of two academic or professional referees who will provide confidential references. Open testimonials and university transcripts are not required at this stage and should not be sent.

Your application should be sent by email to Geraint Jones, the Director of Staffing & Development, at UWCSEA (gjo@uwcsea.edu.sg). The deadline for submission of applications is the end of December.

Once all applications have been received they will be reviewed by a joint panel representing the Queen’s Faculty of Education and UWCSEA. Selected candidates will be invited for interview during the period immediately before or after the Teachers’ Overseas Recruiting Fair, The interviews will take place at Queen’s Faculty of Education or by Skype.
