Teacher candidates may apply for the following Faculty of Education Awards during the academic year.
The Johnny Biosphere Environmental Education Fund 2013-14
The Johnny Biosphere Environmental Education Fund was established in March 2008 by the family of Dr. John Vallentyne, who was a Queen's University professor, prominent research scientist, and lifelong environmental activist. In his persona of Johnny Biosphere, Dr Vallentyne appeared before thousands of school children, teachers and environmental groups all over the world. His message was simple and direct: What we do affects the Earth; what the Earth does affects us. The Johnny Biosphere Environmental Education Fund has been established in his memory to promote environmental awareness among children.
You are invited to apply for the Johnny Biosphere Environmental Education Fund to support an environmental education project of your own initiative.
Funding Criteria
- The money must be used to support a project directed at promoting environmental awareness among children/youth in Ontario.
- Projects may be interdisciplinary in nature (e.g. combine the arts with sciences) and may be organized by more than one individual.
- The fund is open to Queen's University teacher candidates, graduate students and Education Faculty.
- Projects must be completed by April of the current school year.
- Maximum funding in any year will be $2000. Applications may be made for any amount up to this figure.
- Applications made for funding must be limited to two pages and include the following components:
- Applicant(s) name and contact information, including postal address
- Project description including target audience (number of students who will be involved in the initiative(s)
- Rationale describing how your project will promote environmental awareness
- Anticipated benefits (please specify the value of the intended outcomes and who will receive them)
- Budget for use of funding (i.e. materials, equipment—please include actual list of needed supplies, quantities of items, and the price per unit)
- Initiation and completion dates (you may want to consider factors such as time to develop the project and weather limitations, especially for planting etc)
- Documentation of the project must be submitted upon its completion. The documentation should include any receipts for reimbursement, as well as a written report that may be made available to the donors. The report should be 1-2 pages and can include photos or artifacts.
The deadline for applications this year is November 22nd 2013, 4:00 pm. Applications should be sent to diane.lawrence@queensu.ca. Successful applicants will be notified by December 6th, 2013.
John R McCarthy Scholarship
Established in 1987 by John R McCarthy, BA '43, LLD '67, former Deputy Minister of University Affairs and Deputy Minister of Education for the Province of Ontario. Awarded to a teacher candidate who has graduated with at least second-class standing from either a three-year or four-year degree program in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen's University who is normally domiciled in Ontario and is enrolled in the Faculty of Education at Queen's University in the fall session immediately following their undergraduate graduation.
The teacher candidate selected will have:
- displayed leadership in student government and student affairs
- made a personal contribution to the life of the University
- shown a fondness and aptitude for sports and
- displayed leadership and sense of fair play in athletic endeavours
Application by letter should be submitted by 4 October 2013 (in the fall of registration in final-year Concurrent or Consecutive Education) to the Education Registrar, demonstrating how the criteria have been met, and listing two persons who have been asked to submit confidential letters of reference. The scholarship is granted in the Fall upon registration in the Faculty of Education, on the recommendation of the Selection Committee.

Bamji International Practicum Placement Award
- The Bamji International Practicum Placement Award was established in November 2004 by Dr. Pervez (Perry) and Mrs. Annamaria Bamji to promote goodwill and understanding amongst students participating in international study. It is awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to support a final year full-time Concurrent Education student in the Faculty of Education, wishing to broaden their studies in the international environment. The award may be used for travel expenses, living expenses, and academic fees payable to Queen’s University and to other academic institutions in connection with the studies undertaken.
Charles Martyn Elliott and Kathleen Mead Elliott Award for Travel Fellowships in Education
- Established in memory of Charles Martyn Elliott (Arts '44, and the first Superintendent of Schools in the City of Oshawa) and Kathleen Mead Elliott (Arts '42, and a member of the executive of the Queen's Summer School Association) by a bequest from the estate of Kathleen Mead Elliott. Elliott Travel Fellowships for study outside Canada in the field of teacher education, pedagogy, or a related field are awarded to teacher candidates enrolled in the Faculty of Education. Fellowships may be used for travel expenses, living expenses, and academic fees payable to Queen's University and to other academic institutions in connection with the studies undertaken. Preference is given for small budget, high impact proposals. At the end of their international practicum placement, award recipients are expected to submit a report or paper outlining the results of their studies abroad.
Upitis International Study Award
- Awarded annually to full-time students in teacher education and graduate programs enrolled in any Faculty of Education program wishing to broaden their studies in the international environment. Awarded on the basis of financial need, academic achievement and involvement in extra curricular activities, preferably volunteer work for humanitarian causes.
Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) Bursaries (External)
Final-Year Concurrent and Consecutive Education teacher candidates can apply for Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) Bursaries. The bursaries are available to students who are entering Ontario’s faculties of education. Bursary applications must be submitted directly to ETFO no later than 30 April (prior to September enrolment in the final-year Concurrent or Consecutive Education Program).
Margaret Craig Education Award (External)
This award will be presented annually by the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Nu Chapter, on the basis of merit and need, to a female student who:
- is enrolled for full time attendance in the final year* of an approved education program leading to a degree, or diploma (*final-year Concurrent or Consecutive Education teacher candidates);
- demonstrates outstanding ability as a potential educator.
This award will be presented annually, on the basis of merit and need, to a female student who:
- is enrolled for full time attendance in the final year of an approved education program leading to a degree, or diploma
- demonstrates outstanding ability as a potential educator.
To be eligible, a candidate must:
- complete an application form and submit it to the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Nu Chapter, Scholarship and Awards Committee by December 1st.
- provide one reference letter from an academic instructor, to be submitted by email with an electronic signature
The final selection will be made by the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Nu Chapter, Scholarship and Awards Committee and presented to the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Nu Chapter, Executive Board for approval. The cash value of this award in any year will be determined by the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Nu Chapter.
The 2014 award value is $850.
Successful applicants will be invited to attend a DKG meeting in January to receive the award.
*Due to government regulations, the successful applicant will be required to submit her SIN number to be recorded on the T4A form.
Applications are due by 1 December 2013.
OMLTA Helen G. Mitchell Award (External)
This award is granted annually by the Ontario Modern Language Teachers Association (OMLTA), to honour students graduating from a pre-service Modern Language program in Ontario Faculties of Education. The candidate must exemplify the attributes of a potentially outstanding Classical/FSL/International Language teacher. Nominations must only be submitted by the language instructor at the Faculty of Education; no applications are required from teacher candidates.
Convocating teacher candidates may apply for the following awards:
Phyllis M Beatty Memorial Award (External)
This award will be granted annually by the Ontario Alpha Delta Kappa Lambda Chapter to a female teacher candidate who is graduating from the Faculty of Education at Queen's University, and is a graduate of a high school in the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board. The application deadline is 31 May of each year.
Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO/FEEO) Faculty of Education Award
Awarded by ETFO/FEEO to a graduating PJ student. The recipient must demonstrate:
- academic excellence in bachelor of education courses.
- exemplary teaching practices in practicum placements.
- initiative to broaden personal experience in educational culture. Some possible indicators of this are (not all are required):
- leadership in student government at faculty of education;
- support for fellow teacher candidates;
- provincial/local ETFO/FEEO involvement;
- leadership in events which benefit fellow teacher candidates; or
- exemplary interactions with students in a variety of educational settings.
- a commitment to social justice and equity that is in keeping with ETFO/FEEO policy.
Applications consist of:
- a letter (maximum 250 words) from the candidate outlining how they meet the above criteria,
- a written recommendation by the PROF 190 instructor, and
- a written recommendation by the associate teacher.
Written recommendations should outline how the candidate meets the above criteria. Recommendation letters can be submitted by the referee in an email to education.registrar@queensu.ca, or in an sealed envelope with the application letter.
Complete applications must be submitted no later than 19 April 2013 to the Education Registrar's Office (A112).
Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario Bursaries
The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) makes numerous bursaries available to students who are entering Ontario’s faculties of education. Bursary applications must be submitted directly to ETFO no later than 30 April (prior to September enrolment in the final-year Concurrent or Consecutive Education Program).
FD Sawyer Memorial Award (OSSTF/FEESO)
The FD Sawyer Memorial Award was established in the memory of Frank D Sawyer, who was a member of the Provincial Executive during some of its most stirring years from 1952 to 1959 and President of OSSTF in 1954. At the time of his death in 1960 he was principal of Petrolia District High School. Frank Sawyer's great contribution to Federation lay in his ability to discover the basic issues in the many difficulties which arose in teacher-board relationships during his term of office and in his having a sense of humour in periods of crisis.
The OSSTF/FEESO Faculty of Education Award, valued at $1,000 annually, shall be awarded to the graduating Intermediate/Senior or Technological Studies Teacher Candidate who applies for the award and who in the opinion of his/her Faculty of Education’s Awards Committee has shown a clear understanding and empathy for the values of unionism, is attempting to secure a job with a public secondary board, and who best exemplifies the award criteria. Completed applications must be submitted to the Education Registrar's Office (A112) no later than 19 April 2013.
Some of the awards our convocating teacher candidates are nominated for most frequently are:
- Lorne Cassidy Award, which is awarded to the graduating student who best displays outstanding talents and interests in the education of exceptional children during his or her program of studies at the Faculty of Education.
- LW Copp Award, which is awarded to the graduating Primary-Junior student with high overall achievement and who demonstrates the qualities of an exemplary primary educator.
- Frank J Fowler Award, which is awarded to the graduating Primary-Junior student who best demonstrates the qualities of an exemplary primary educator.
- DE Loney Prize, which is awarded to the graduating Technological Education student who has shown the most outstanding qualities of character and scholarship and demonstrated potential as a teacher.
- OECTA Award, which is awarded to the graduating student who has demonstrated academic excellence in one or more of the courses preparing candidates to teach in Ontario Roman Catholic Schools: EDST 456, A Study of the Religious Education Program in the Roman Catholic Schools of Ontario; FOUN 416, Catholic Education.
- John Deakin Buckley Walton Excellence in Student Teaching Award, which is awarded to the graduating Intermediate-Secondary or Technological Education student who has demonstrated excellence in student teaching.
- John Watson Award, which is a awarded to the graduating Primary-Junior student who has demonstrated excellence in student teaching.
