Fall Term

The Job Search in Education. It's a Job in Itself!

We are here to help! Attend this workshop and you will get an idea of where to apply, when to apply, and what options there are out there.  It will include an update on the job market, job search strategies and application procedures, and information on important events and deadlines.

The World of International Teaching

Education Career Services has assisted hundreds of Queen’s B.Ed. graduates in finding teaching positions in over 90 countries. This presentation, given by Elspeth Morgan, Coordinator, Education Career Services, will include:

  1. An overview of opportunities available in international schools, teaching ESL, public school systems in English speaking countries, and international development.
  2. An explanation of the 26th annual Teachers’ Overseas Recruiting Fair, 24-26 January, 2014.
  3. Information to help decide whether, and when, to teach overseas.
  4. Photos of schools around the world.

Resumes and Covering Letters that Stand Out - They're Not What You Thought!

Presenting yourself in writing is a vital aspect of the job application process.  Resumes and covering letters for positions in education are remarkably different than those required in other employment fields. Using feedback from school administrators and experts in the field, we have developed a Resume and Covering Letter Workshop specifically designed to promote your strengths.

To TORF or Not to TORF – That’s a good question!

Intrigued at the thought of attending TORF and not sure if it is right for you? Heard some conflicting information about TORF? About teaching overseas? TORF is a wonderful event, but it is not for everyone. If you want to learn more, if you want to determine if TORF is your best option, please attend this workshop to get the most accurate information possible before registering for TORF.

Winter Term

Résumé Writing Refresher

Seems like it was a long time ago that you attended the More than a Résumé workshop and you need a bit of a reminder about how to put your résumé together? Elspeth Morgan will be giving workshops to refresh your memory and to help you continue with getting your job search documents prepared and ready for submission.

Cover Letter Writing Refresher

Elspeth Morgan will offer strategies for anyone wishing to improve a covering letter or, and to those who are just starting the process. Content, style and tone are all important aspects of your letter.

The Interview for Secondary Positions

This workshop will be given by a panel of secondary school principals, public and Catholic, and will include excellent advice on preparing for interviews, probable interview content, a simulation, and time for questions and discussion. Highly recommended for all I/S and Technological Studies candidates.

Related Careers

Would you like to learn about the wide range of careers related to teaching? How can your skills as an educator be applied in related settings? Christine Fader, Career Counsellor with Queen’s Career Services, hosts this workshop full of information about transferable skills, examples of related positions, strategies for determining a direction, and available resources.

Teaching in Independent Schools

This presentation is offered by Paul Elsley who has worked as a teacher and administrator in independent schools for 28 years. These schools (almost 1,000 in Ontario alone) represent a growing segment of the job market and hire more teachers, proportional to their enrolment, than publicly-funded schools. Learn about the varied nature of these schools, their staffing practices, and teaching opportunities.

Teaching in the UK

Thinking of teaching in the UK, or just seeing if it is right for you? Presented by Pamela Goodspeed, Career and Recruitment Advisor with Education Career Services, and qualified UK teacher, this session will focus on what it is like to teach in the UK, a brief look at the curriculum, and how to apply for jobs.
