Community and Social Services
All cities host local organizations that provide a wide range of social services ranging from education to mental health to family life and more. These organizations are typically not for profit and directories are available either on-line or in hard copy, depending on the city. The information is often gathered by a community information centre. Even volunteer work with a community service organization could lead to networking opportunities, skill development and future employment.

Education Publishing/Curriculum Development
School textbook publishers rely heavily on freelance editors for line editing, fact-checking and assessing age-appropriate readability and relevance of material. For the home schooling market, independent publishers develop lesson plans, reading lists and testing modules consistent with provincial education board requirements. Editors can hold a degree in any field and payments are on a per-project basis.  Here are a few links to some of Canada’s largest education publishers:

Museum Educator

Have you ever read a museum mission statement? They are, fundamentally, educational institutions. It should come as no surprise then, that they often employ those with education degrees. Museum jobs offer an educational and fascinating alternative to the classroom. Begin your search with learning what types of jobs in museums exist in Ontario, the UK and internationally.

Correctional Education
Teachers in prisons are part of a therapeutic milieu and, working with other professionals, help to rehabilitate students, showing them a new way of living. A growing body of research shows that education and training programs can raise employment prospects and reduce recidivism. Numerous opportunities in Canada exist within this field. The Canadian Criminal Justice Association covers a wide range of issues at the federal and provincial levels. The Correctional Education Association is another broad resource.

Adult Education/Immigration Services/Community Settlement Worker
Canada prides itself on its multicultural model.  As a result, there are numerous programs and (both public and private) that cater to new Canadians and their experiences in Canada.  Working as an English instructor is challenging and rewarding work.  Opportunities to work in this area range from English language instruction for newcomers to Canada to refugee clinics/services.
Community Settlement Workers facilitate the social, cultural, economic and civic integration of newcomers and immigrants into the local and wider community, by providing information & referral services, interpretation, one-to-one assistance and developing/coordinating new and existing resources, group activities and community forums, designed to meet the settlement needs of newcomers.  The following are links to:

Tutoring/Online Instruction
There are many private tutoring agencies and learning centres that can provide temporary, part-time, or full-time employment. One simple way to look them up is through the Yellow Pages using appropriate key words.

On-line instruction for credit and non-credit courses is a growing field. For example, the Ontario Federation of Teaching Parents maintains a list of some of the organizations offering Ontario high school credits on-line. Additional related organizations can be found on the same site.
