As a result of increasing interest in teaching overseas, Education Career Services sponsors the Teachers' Overseas Recruiting Fair, which is for certified teachers with at least two years of full-time elementary or secondary classroom experience. Some places are reserved for inexperienced teachers, with priority given to Queen's B.Ed. candidates. Teacher candidates from other universities and teachers without two years experience are welcome to apply and will be accommodated as space allows.
25th Annual Teachers' Overseas Recruiting Fair January 25-27, 2013A recruiting fair provides a forum for teachers to have face-to-face interviews with administrators of international schools or their representatives. TORF is the original and largest recruiting fair in Canada, established in 1989.
We will have a variety of schools offering one or more of the following diplomas or curricula: International Baccalaureate, American, Ontario, or host country. The schools have been screened and we do not accept all schools or organizations interested in recruiting at this event.
Impressive Placement StatisticsCompared with similar events, candidates at Queen's do very well. We believe that the organization and the atmosphere of the Fair contribute to successful matches. Most importantly, the Administrators frequently comment on the quality of the candidates accepted into the TORF.
As a result of the screening process, the administrators are an impressive group. Good schools attract both good administrators and good teachers. We have received many compliments over the years about the professionalism, enthusiasm, and courtesy of the recruiters.
Personal TouchWe strive to maintain a civilized, cooperative atmosphere. The Queen's Fair is organized by educators for educators. The planning committee of 25 people consists of faculty, staff, education students, and alumni and all are committed to this event and to international education.
Candidates appreciate the attention to detail and benefit from our many years of experience. We think of everything in order to facilitate a weekend dedicated to important decisions.
Comfortable SizeAs a mid-sized fair, it is large enough to offer a wide range of opportunities while avoiding the stress and problems associated with larger events.
For candidates who do not find a match at the Recruiting Fair, we offer continuing service as schools continue to contact us through the spring and summer.
Since 1989, the Queen's Fair has developed an excellent reputation among candidates and recruiters. We would be pleased to have you speak with anyone who has attended.
Low FeesAs a non-profit educational institution, we charge low fees to candidates, essentially for cost-recovery purposes. Our mission is educational and professional, aimed at providing a valuable professional development component throughout the weekend.
In a typical year 60% or more of participants accept offers from schools at the Fair or from other schools (subsequent to the Fair) as a result of referrals by Queen's. An additional 4-5% of participants report overseas positions secured through other means. As a result, 2/3 to 3/4 of all participants will teach overseas in the following school year. (Of the balance, some decline offers, decide not to teach overseas or are unable to find a match for a variety of reasons.)
For those ineligible or unable to attend the Recruiting Fair, you are welcome to register with our International Teacher Placement Service and/or visit our International Links page.
