Our sympathies to the family of Colten Boushie

Message from Dean Rebecca Luce-Kapler

On behalf of the Faculty of Education at Queen’s, I offer our deepest sympathies to the family of Colten Boushie, to the Red Pheasant First Nation, and to the broader Indigenous communities.

We are profoundly saddened that Canada’s legal system has failed Indigenous people once again, continuing a pattern of injustice that continues to deeply affect lives. The impacts of this decision are reverberating through the communities and hearts of many of our students, staff, faculty, and community right now. This is the time for compassionate listening and a willingness to support.

As educators we have a responsibility to provide spaces in our classrooms and communities for healing and to engage our students to empower change. Let’s work together to imagine a Canada that is an invitation for all people, especially the young, to strongly engage in conversations and activities that move us closer to reconciliation.
