Remembering Tammy Chen

August 14, 2017

We are deeply saddened to learn the news of Tammy Chen’s death on Sunday evening in Burkina Faso’s attack. Tammy was our M.Ed. student at the Faculty of Education from 2007 to 2010. We have fond memories of Tammy and her time with us.

I became her supervisor the last few months of her master’s work when her supervisor, Dr. Sheryl Bond, retired. Tammy was an intelligent young woman with energy and vision. From the beginning, I was impressed by her courage and her strong sense of social justice, qualities that took her to Burkina Faso to work in a facility for young street people. It was this location where she conducted her research. One impressive result of her study was her creation of a foundation—Brighter Futures in Burkina Faso that focuses on a sustainable, community-based model of development. Tammy was a true visionary who believed in the power of education to change the world.

Tammy will be in our hearts and memories. Our deepest sympathies go out to her family and friends.
