Research Interests

  • Arts Education, Performing Arts Education (dance, drama, music): elementary division
  • Elementary Arts Curriculum, Curriculum History
  • Arts integration, cross-curricular and interdisciplinary curriculum/pedagogy
  • Teacher training in the arts
  • Effects of participation in the arts (teachers/students)
  • Community arts engagement, artists in the schools programs
  • Education policy
  • Cultural studies, philosophy, metaphysics, postcolonial theory, gender studies
  • Research methodologies, epistemology and ontology


After graduating from Trent University in Cultural Studies (’98), Paul spent 13 years in the film and television industry in Halifax and Toronto as an Art Director, Property Master, Construction Coordinator and technician before returning to school to become an elementary teacher. These experiences, along with the inspiration of professors and colleagues, a love of learning, and a passion for music and the arts, encouraged him to continue his research in arts education towards improving arts engagement opportunities in Ontario schools. Paul currently lives in Kingston and engages in the arts as often as possible. He encourages you to do so also.

  • Board member of the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning, serving on the operations, communications, community engagement, and human resources committees; also leading the curatorial working group

  • playing music in bands: Hollow Hedges, Foiler, The Silver Hearts
