Successful Opening Reception for the In Process Exhibition Presented by ACE Teacher Candidates

By Anam Fatima, MEd Candidate

The 2013 Artist in Community Education (ACE) teacher candidates held an opening reception for their exhibition In Process on Monday February 4th, 2013.

It was a chance for teacher candidates to explore the process of displaying art. The name “In Process” was chosen by students from a shortlist of 7 possible names. In Process emerged from the central theme of the exhibition, which is to place emphasis on the process and the stages of creative development, rather than the end product. Anne Johnston, ACE Co-coordinator, described thinking creatively as “a process—a way of being, not a finite answer.”

Certainly the central theme was indicated in the art work itself. The pieces displayed were reflective of the careful thought that was put into them, from set design to mix media display to interactive art work, where viewers could interact with the art and be engaged in the process of creating it.

The opening reception was curated by Maansi Parikh and Caitlin Dalby. David Macdiarmid, who worked closely with the curators, described the challenges of hanging art. “The cream walls were definitely a challenge”, he says about the walls in The Studio, “Every space is different and hanging art in a new space is always challenging. Figuring out where to hang which piece depends a lot on the space itself, as well as the lighting you have to work with.”

“The Studio” is located in Duncan McArthur Hall Room B144. Everyone is welcome. The gallery hours are 11:30 am - 1:30 pm  Monday to Friday in April 1-19, 2013

Thanks and congratulations to our ACE teacher candidates for organizing a great opening reception and exhibit!
