Abstract: Indigenous peoples have their own distinctive knowledge base. Indigenous knowledge systems comprise the practices, values, beliefs and understandings of Indigenous peoples’ relationship with the world and are intimately linked to our worldview. Embedded within Indigenous knowledge are cultural practices and learning processes that not only contribute positively to Indigenous children’s cultural identity but serve as meaning making systems that offer potential and promise for young Indigenous children’s literacy learning and school success. This presentation will discuss how meaning is made through a range of Indigenous cultural and linguistic modes and representation and how young Indigenous children are socialized into literacy through local and culturally specific experiences. I will also describe how effective literacy pedagogies in the early years, and most productive for local contexts, can draw on Indigenous forms of knowledge and how educators can create meaningful learning opportunities for all students.
