Aboriginal and World Indigenous Educational Studies Program Opening Ceremony on July 4th

AWIES_Opening_Ceremony.jpgStudents, faculty members and staff celebrated the opening of the Master of Education in Aboriginal and World Indigenous Educational Studies (AWIES) Program together in the Paul Park Garden at Duncan McArthur Hall on July 4th.

The Aboriginal and World Indigenous Educational Studies Program is a part-time blended program for students with experience in Aboriginal and World Indigenous communities.  The face-to-face component of the program takes place in July and the balance of the program is online.Smudge_Ceremony.jpg

The celebration began with welcome remarks from Rebecca Luce-Kapler, the Faculty of Education Associate Dean Graduate Studies and Research, as well as from Jan Hill, the Director of the Four Directions Aboriginal Student Centre

Drumming_and_Storytelling.jpgAll of those present participated in a smudging ceremony, with the burning of sage to drive out bad spirits, feelings, and influences and to keep bad spirits from entering the area.

Participants were entertained by traditional drumming and storytelling, performed by Elder Bernard Nelson, and they shared a traditional meal provided by Carol Anne Maracle from the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory before classes started that afternoon.
