Jia Ma Awarded International Grants

Jia Ma

PhD candidate Jia Ma has recently received two international grants to support her doctoral research entitled Chinese Students’ Journey to Success on High-stakes English Language Tests: Nature, Effects and Values of Their Test Preparation. Jia is supervised by Dr. Liying Cheng and she is a member of the Assessment and Evaluation Group (AEG).

Jia has received 2014 TOEFL Small Grants for Doctoral Research in Second or Foreign Language Assessment funded by Educational Testing Service (ETS). This award provides funding for promising doctoral students working in the field of foreign or second language assessment to support the timely completion of their dissertations. Up to ten doctoral students all over the world receive this fund each year. Alumna Christine Doe and PhD candidate Youyi Sun, both supervised by Dr. Liying Cheng, previously received this award in 2010 and 2011.

Jia has also received 2014 TIRF Doctoral Dissertation Grant (DDG) by the International Research Foundation (TIRF) for English Language Education. The purpose of this award is to support research of doctoral students working on topics related to language assessment, bilingualism/plurilingualism in multiple contexts, language teacher education, language policy, technology in language instruction, and effective English language education in schools. TIRF funds up to six DDGs each year.
