Applications for admission to graduate programs are completed and submitted online. The School of Graduate Studies website provides the online form (which is the same for all programs) and step-by-step instructions for setting up your account.
In addition to the online application and application fee, you are required to submit the following documentation (paper versions) to the Faculty of Education Graduate Studies and Research Office, Duncan McArthur Hall, Room A106:
As part of the application process, applicants who are non-native speakers of English are required to obtain a minimum score of 580 (paper-based)/237 (computer-based)/92 Internet-based) or higher on the TOEFL test to be eligible for admission to graduate programs in the Faculty of Education. To be competitive applicants should also achieve a minimum of 4.5 on the Test of Written English (TWE).
Applicants who take the IELTS must achieve a minimum of Band 7 or higher to be eligible for admission.
Additional information on language proficiency tests is available on the School of Graduate Studies website.
The School of Graduate Studies requires a minimum of two academic references from your current and/or previous instructor(s) and/or professors familiar with you academic/research potential. Professional references from employers in a senior role to your own, in lieu of academic references, are accepted only if it has been more than 5 years since you completed your most recent university degree. MEd (AWIES) applicants are required to provide two additional letters of reference from respected members of the Aboriginal or world indigenous community to which he/she either belongs or is related to (e.g. Elders, Community Leaders, Work Supervisors, Social/School Counsellors, Educators, Director of local Friendship Centre). Referees must be able to comment on Aboriginal community contributions which you have made as well as your potential to serve in the field of Aboriginal education.
Applicants who choose to list more than the required number of referees in their online application, should note that their application will not be deemed complete and will not be reviewed by the admissions committee until all listed references are received.
Please note that referees are notified that you want them to provide a reference for you by email after you have submitted your online application, so please submit your application at least two weeks before the application deadline. Please also be sure to include the correct email addresses of your referees on your online application.
NOTE:The online application form by default includes three spaces for referee contact information. Applicants to the MEd (AWIES) program who are required to submit a fourth reference, as well as applicants to the MEd and PhD program who choose to provide a fourth reference, must add additional space for the forth reference by clicking the "add referee" button in the online application.
International applicants who are enrolled in the final year of an undergraduate or master's degree program outside of Canada at the time of application are strongly encouraged to delay the submission of an application to the MEd or PhD programs in Education until the following academic year. If you choose not to wait, please be aware that it is possible that you may experience some difficulty in obtaining a student VISA in time to arrive in Canada in early September.
