Overview

  • part-time study only
  • courses are equivalent to 36 contact hours
  • the first summer (month of July) is face-to-face and the balance is online
  • the program consists of a minimum credit value of 10 half courses
  • students are able to choose from 2 program patterns: 6 half courses plus a thesis or 8 half courses plus a project
  • coursework is flexible to allow students to pursue their research interests
  • each student is assigned to a program advisor whose responsibilities include developing a program of study that coheres with the student’s professional goals and with the program’s aims
  • students can expect to complete within 36 to 48 months of part-time study
  • degree requirements must be completed within 5 years of initial registration

There is only one field of study in this program which is Aboriginal and World Indigenous Educational Studies.

All students are required to take EDUC-872* Educational Research in Aboriginal and Indigenous Contexts, and it is a prerequisite for the advanced research courses, i.e. EDUC-875* and EDUC-876*

 

 Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission to the Master of Education AWIES program, applicants must provide evidence of:

  1. professional experience in Aboriginal and/or world indigenous education or a related field, a B.Ed. degree or its equivalent, and a minimum of a B-average in a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent; OR
  2. two years of professional experience in Aboriginal and/or world indigenous education or a related field, and a minimum of a B- average in a Bachelor's Honours degree or its equivalent; OR
  3. a B.Ed. degree and a background in Aboriginal and/or world indigenous issues, and a minimum of a mid-B average in a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent; OR
  4. demonstrated significant professional experience in Aboriginal and/or indigenous education or related field, and a minimum of a mid-B average in a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent.

In addition to the above, an applicant must submit two letters of support from respected members of the applicant's Aboriginal or world indigenous community to which they either belong or are related. Since preference will be given to qualified applicants of Aboriginal ancestry (Status, non-Status, Métis, Inuit) applicants may be requested to provide proof of Aboriginal ancestry where applicable. Documentation which provides proof of Aboriginal ancestry may include: a status card, church records, a Métis card, a verification letter from an official Political Territorial Organization (PTO) or First Nations.

Applicants whose native languages do not include English must obtain a score of 580 or more on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Application Deadline and Start Dates

 

Our next cohort of students will begin their program in July 2013 on-campus. Applicants may submit their applications and all supporting documentation for July 2013 admission between now and April 16, 2013.

 

Complete applications will be considered as they are received until all available spaces are filled. If this happens prior to April 16, 2013 an announcement will be posted here and on the Faculty homepage. Be sure to check for this announcement before submitting an application as application fees are non-refundable.
