Biography

Amanda Cooper is a former secondary school teacher (Biology and English) and currently an Assistant Professor in Educational Policy and Leadership at Queen’s University. She specializes in Knowledge Mobilization (KMb), efforts to address research-practice-policy gaps across the education sector. Her interests professionally and academically revolve around improving research use in public services. She is the former program manager, research and KMb, of the Knowledge Network for Applied Education Research (KNAER), an ambitious effort to improve KMb in education across Ontario. Amanda also managed the Research Supporting Practice in Education program at OISE, from its inception in 2007-2012.  

Her background also includes an interdisciplinary focus. She is on the coordinating committee for the KTE COP (Knowledge Translation and Exchange Community of Practice) in the health sector. She is also on the steering committee for the K* Initiative, which brings together various sectors (health, education, environment, agriculture, international development to name a few) and stakeholders (practitioners, policymakers, researchers, community members) internationally to move the field of inquiry forward collaboratively across diverse settings.

She provides talks, workshops and consulting on knowledge mobilization for researchers, practitioners, policymakers, intermediaries and other organizations across sectors.

Current Research Project

There is growing awareness that research mediation by intermediary organizations is integral to knowledge mobilization. Amanda’s doctoral research analyzed efforts made by 44 research brokering organizations (third party intermediaries) that facilitate linkages between research producing contexts and research using contexts to increase research use and its impact in education across Canada (Executive Summary; Doctoral Thesis)
