MUSIC: Catriona is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and inspiring music educator who has studied from master teachers of harmonica, shamisen (Japan) and ngoni (Mali). She started performing as a teenaged harmonica player, and gained considerable touring experience with Halifax’s Plumtree as a bassist. Her Hiroshima-based band, The Secret, toured in Japan and Canada. This past year she was greatly honored to perform at the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre in Rwanda, Japan.

SONGWRITING: Catriona’s songs are shaped by New Orleans Rhythm and Blues and Japanese Punk Rock. Her band, Plumtree, was featured in the soundtrack for the motion picture Scott Pilgrim (named after the band’s song) with Beck and The Rolling Stones and was the #1 album on itunes in Canada, Australia and #2 in the US. Catriona has had her songs used in film and Television (Degrassi, The Next Generation, Numb3rs) and has received grants from the Nova Scotia Arts Council, FACTOR, PromoFACT, and the City of Ottawa.

EDUCATION: Catriona is a graduate of the Artist in Community Education program at Queen’s University. She helped to found a rock camp for Girls in Ottawa and currently teaches with the Ottawa Folklore Centre and the City of Ottawa. Catriona has taught harmonica across Canada (Halifax Public Library, Hillside Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Ottawa Folk Festival) and has given specialized classes for youth and seniors. Her harmonica studies have brought her to Toronto, New Orleans and Mississippi.

PAPER: Catriona has studied pop up cards and paper folding in Japan and in Michigan (with Matt Shilan http://www.mattshlian.com/). She’s given pop-up workshops for youth in Ottawa and taught at summer camps. Her passion for children’s books includes working for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a program that mails free books each month to preschool children across Canada.
